CHAMPIONS LEAGUE – MATCHDAY ONE RECAP

The Champions League is back!!!
And we had some great games over the last two days.
Here are some of talking points:

Liverpool and Paris St Germain entertain in a thrilling encounter..
This was the pick of the first match-day of the Champions League. And it did not disappoint.
A lot was expected from players like Cavani, Salah and Neymar but all three were actually
quite disappointing on the night.
The defending was shocking at certain stages, some top players made errors in dangerous
positions that led to goals (I’m looking at you Salah and Mbappe), and there was a last
minute winner to top it all up. Don’t forget the one-eye celebration. What a game.

Tottenham bring form from Premier League..
Tottenham went to the San-Siro with the hope of turning around their loss of form in the
Premier League. They went a goal up and could have had another but Harry Kane missed a
very good chance to do that. Unfortunately, they could not after conceding two very late
goals- the first, a sublime effort from Mauro Icardi. They need to sort out their mini-crisis as
soon as they can. Also, Inter Milan showed great character to come from behind and win
after some poor performances in the Serie A as well. This is already shaping up to be a very
entertaining group.

Ronaldo sees red at the Mestalla.
This time, Ronaldo grabbed the headlines for the wrong reasons yesterday. He was shown a
straight red in his first Champions League game for Juventus against Valencia. He was as
shocked as his team mates about the refereeing decision but ultimately, his dismissal did not
deter Juventus as they still went home with a 2-0 win thanks to penalties duly converted by

Miralem Pjanic, penalty kicks that Ronaldo would have taken had he been on. This would
also mean that we would not get to see him return to Old Trafford against his former team.

Real Madrid open defense with convincing win over Roma
The champions got off to a flying start with a very dominating display. All the goals were
sublime. From Isco’s free-kick to Bale’s effort and then to Mariano’s (the new Ronaldo?)
wonder strike. Will they be able to defend their title under new management? We just have
to wait I guess. On the other hand, what exactly is going on with Roma? Obviously, this is
not the game to assess their performance, but still, they cannot seem to get themselves out
of the hole that they are currently in.

Manchester City stunned by Lyon.
Days after Mikel Arteta, who had to step in for the banned Pep Guardiola, made a bold claim
saying that “Manchester City is the best club in the world”, they go and lose to Lyon at the
Etihad. Lyon deserved their win based on the balance of play and credit should go to them
for playing very positively considering that they were playing ‘the best team in the world’.
This is should not raise panic for the Manchester City faithful but they would need to step up.
